The Hot and Cold of it
my heart:
an abandoned
cigarette butt
sputtering on
the sidewalk in
mid-winter, its
lonely embers
anticipating
the kiss of
some charitable
snowflake, her
approach
welcomed by
a puff of smoke
rising to her
curiously
soothing touch
despite --
or maybe
because of --
the certainty
of a future
extinguished
